Each year, the International Day of Peace is celebrated worldwide on September 21. This year celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was approved by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
This year an additional declaration was made in Cameroon during a women’s peace conference, held the following day on September 22. The conference, established by UNESCO, UN Women, More Women in Politics, and the Council of Imams and Dignitaries (CIDIMUC), promoted the need for more female involvement in the political process, and the necessity for their continued efforts towards a more cohesive and peaceful country.
In addition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the conference presented an additional “Declaration of Women”, which pointed out increasing occurrences of violence and deaths of husbands and fathers in conflict zones, the rising number of displaced persons and refugees, and the constant radicalization of local men and children.
Speakers at the conference encouraged those attending to promote and pray for peaceful solutions to area conflicts.
